Description

Eric Metaxas laments that we no longer have any heroes. Lawrence W. Reed emphasizes the importance of character for a free society.  A hero is an ordinary person who demonstrates strength of mind in regard to danger.  They are ordinary men who have done extraordinary things. Thus, they are men (or women) that are worthy of imitation.  However, such examples are few and far between for this generation.  Our current generation doesn't even understand what it is to be a hero as evidenced by the fact that the dictionary definition of a hero has changed since the early 1800s.  Heroes are those that inspire us to do better, to be better, and to pursue greater things.

We will read inspiring stories of courage, character, and conviction. This class has homework. Students will read and present to the class.

For students 9-19.  Younger students will read adaptations for younger students.  All students will have weekly biographical reading. High school students should strive to read several books over the course of the semester and could be awarded .5 credit for history or social science.  Middle grade students will be challenged to read 1-3 chapter books as well as some picture books and listening to audio books over the semester.  I am happy to work with parents to design the best option for your student. The lives of the individuals we will study cover a good part of the 20th century and will make for a unique study of 20th century history.

Parents will need to plan to acquire books either through purchase or the library in advance of specific weeks.  A reading list will be provided upon registration. Many of the heroes we will read about have had lots written about them others not as much.  When possible I will provide audio and picture book options.

Students will need a composition notebook and sticky tabs.
