Pre-Algebra with Biology
Once a student has mastered arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents) they are ready for algebra. There is no math in between arithmetic and algebra. Our public schools drill kids to boredom for three years of middle school until they hate math. If your student has mastered arithmetic, why not begin algebra? You can spend two years learning algebra rather than three years beating arithmetic to death. If they really haven't mastered arithmetic then allow them to apply math while learning a different subject. In this class, students will apply arithmetic skills and be introduced to algebraic equations.
Required text: Pre-Algebra 1 with Biology by Stanley F. Schmidt, PhD
Students will be required to read. Reading is the most efficient way to learn. By reading and applying math skills to the story/subject at hand students gain confidence and experience using their math skills in preparation for beginning to study algebra. This course also serves as an introduction to biology without all the memorizing of names that will be forgotten in a year. We will watch the videos from Biology 101 of the 101 Series. We will follow it up with Pre-Algebra 2 with Economic in the spring semester.
