Reading Crew

This is a year-long course that spans throughout the entire academic year (14 classes in Fall 2024 and 16 classes in Spring 2025 semester). Registration confirms your student’s spot for the year-long course. This class is a combination of reading comprehension and Christian fiction novel reading. Students will read an informative, narrative or poetic selection at the beginning of each class and then answer questions on the activity sheet. We will use Reading Comprehension 4 Skill Sheets from Abeka. During this activity, students will learn to develop essential reading skills and retain the important elements presented within a story.

Next, students will read a chapter from one of the two intriguing historical Christian fiction novels-Saved at Sea (in Fall 2024) and Song of the Brook (in Spring 2025). We will read these novels together as a group in class. This part of the class involves critical thinking development activities such as predicting possible outcomes, analyzing characters, summarizing chapters, and more group discussions.

Students will prepare for their independent book reports towards the end of each semester.

Saved at Sea: Travel to a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Great Britain to meet Alick, a Scottish lighthouse keeper. In the midst of a terrible storm, Alick is able
to save one tiny living bundle from a capsized ship. What happens next is a story about God’s love and plan—it is always perfect.

Song of the Brook: Allow your children to dive back into Hilda’s adventures in its 15- chapter sequel. While reading independently, your students will follow Hilda as she and her family move to the hills of Washington and adjust to a different lifestyle than what they were accustomed to back on the farm in Minnesota. Hilda learns through trusting God’s plan that He always knows what’s best for us, and your students will get to see Hilda overcome obstacles and realize that God’s best is yet to come.
