Alan Erisman, author of the book The Math Myth: “If we taught English the way we teach math, students would spend all their time doing spelling tests and diagraming sentences but never read a great book or ever read poetry.”
Geometry is the study of the properties of space and includes distance, size, angles and position of figures. Along with algebra, it is one of the oldest branches of mathematics. Fortunately, geometry is much less abstract than algebra and many students find it easier to understand. We will limit ourselves to plane geometry. We will introduce mathematical postulates, theorems and proofs.
This course begins in the fall semester and will continue through the spring semester.
We will use the book:
Workman Publishing Co
Prerequisite: Algebra. This will be a follow-on course to algebra. We will very quickly review algebra, but the review will be very brief.
We will study:
Points, lines planes and angles
Deductive reasoning
Parallel lines and planes
Congruent Triangles
Quadrilaterals
Inequalities in geometry
Similar polygons
Right triangles
Circles
Constructions and loci
Areas of plane figures
Areas and volumes of solids
Coordinate geometry
Transformations
